visualgraphc: Poster series about one of the most interesting and colorful island in the world: Burano (Venice — Italy). Burano’s houses are painted with unusual and particular colors — legend has it that fishermen painted their houses with bright colors to recognize them from long distance, in the fog, and to define their proprieties. The posters are inspired by the colors, the details and the volumes of Burano’s houses matteobarbi.com

Chromeography: Metal logos and lettering Over the last couple of years I’ve seen some wonderful chrome lettering pass across my screen from Stephen Coles’ Chromeography site and today I thought I’d share a few of my favourites. Stephen, who featured in 8 Faces #2 and whose book The Geometry of Type we reviewed on Type worship, has been running the blog on tumblr since 2009. The collection of letters led to an exhibition last year at Mota Italic in Berlin and with it the creation of the C...

typeworship: Bike Badges Collecting these would be a great hobby for someone interested in both type and bikes.Self proclaimed ‘bike geek’ Jeffery Conner is certainly falls into both categories.  A professor from Michigan, USA, Jeff’s been collecting bicycle head badges since 2000, starting with just three badges, his collection grew to over 800 in just 36 months. The slightly curved badges come from all over the world and Jeff has found almost every letter of the alphabet (he was just missing...

Inhabited Type I’m transfixed by the level of detail that have gone into these illustrated letters. The little people seem pretty happy in their typographic environments. The designs are from various alphabet projects by Jing Zhang, based in East London.

typeworship: Writing & Lettering & Illuminating Edward Johnston, master calligrapher and the designer of London’s Underground typeface, was a captivating teacher at the Central School and Royal Academy of Art. He eventually distilled his knowledge and techniques into a classic text, “Writing and Illuminating and Lettering”.  It’s been out of print for decades but I managed to find a 1929 copy. The book opened my eyes to a number of creative lettering and illustrative techniques and almos...

Type & Lettering Advent Calendar Day 1: Andrei Robu We kick off our count by revealing our first design by Andrei Robu. As something of a nomadic designer, Andrei has practiced his craft all over the world and is currently working between New York and London. He has many strings to his bow, being one of the founders of the TypEverything blog, and preferring to explore a huge variety of lettering styles and techniques rather than be tied to one style or direction. Andrei’s elaborate, swirling...

The Maths and Magic of Type MakingToday I was excited to spend some quality time pouring over the latest issue of Typograph.Journal. It’s been lovingly created by Australian-based Kiwi designer, Typograph. Her (aka Nicole Arnett Phillips). In this third volume, The Maths and Magic of Visual Language, Nicole takes us on her journey examining where geometry and visual perception intersect (and diverge). The perfectly formed articles are packed with visual examples that explore the key sections:Visua...
