The Ghost in the Machine by Erika Iris Simmons “The Ghost in the Machine” series was inspired by some strange ideas. How at one level we are cellular beings and another we are a single “self.” The single cassette tape I thought of as representing the mind. The tape ribbon represents our thoughts, the data within. Taking that data – those bits of memory – and rearranging them to form what we see as a face is my way of finding a “ghost in the machine.” I also liked the fact that when you look at a...

Verena Gerlach (Berlin) ∙ InterviewFF Karbid typeface, 1999-2011“FF Karbid is an interpretation of storefront lettering created between 1900 and the late 1930s that was preserved due to the German Democratic Republic’s economy of scarcity. In the beginning of the 1990s, FF Karbid’s designer Verena Gerlach documented storefront lettering in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte districts. Sadly, these have since almost entirely disappeared from the landscape, due to gentrification and renovation wor...

Tumblr De Stijl. by byrn The identity of a company, specially a web service, depends too much of its website layout. We don’t have to see logos or typography in order to indentify the company, sometimes just we need colors and position. That’s why I merge the website layout with the artistic movement: De stijl. Swiss “Carte postale” with Basel-Bern cancels & airplane air post stamps This postcard was likely mailed to Zurich in 1924. It’s interesting to notice that the “By Airmail” label on the top left of the postcard includes the three widely-spoken languages in Switzerland. Each language is set apart by the type style and width. The hierarchy sets the first line in German, with a sans serif and extra bold typeface. Italian falls on line three, set in a lighter italic face.

Suki Heather (London) Album design for Stories From Far Away on Piano, James Heather debut release, 2017“The black and white album art by Suki features layers of Indian ink bled into newspaper print, repeatedly scanned and treated to interpret the recirculation of information. It also plots the nine latitude and longitude locations where each story came from, forming an abstract world—reinterpreting place into something less literal and more expressive.” (source)
