The oldest cluster in its cloud This image shows NGC 121, a globular cluster in the constellation of Tucana (The Toucan). Globular clusters are big balls of old stars that orbit the centres of their galaxies like satellites — the Milky Way, for example, has around 150. NGC 121 belongs to one of our neighbouring galaxies, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). It was discovered in 1835 by English astronomer John Herschel, and in recent years it has been studied in detail by astronomers wishing to...

Meteors and Milky Way over Mount Ranier : Despite appearances, the sky is not falling. Two weeks ago, however, tiny bits of comet dust were. Featured here is the Perseids meteor shower as captured over Mt. Rainier, Washington, USA. The image was created from a two-hour time lapse video, snaring over 20 meteors, including one that brightened dramatically on the image left. Although each meteor train typically lasts less than a second, the camera was able to capture their color progressions as th...

popmech: There are two kinds of people in the defense aviation world: those who love the A-10 Warthog and those who want to see it mothballed. The Pentagon wants to save money by retiring these old fixed-wing tank busters to make room for new, advanced warplanes like the F-35 Lightning II. This has led to a howls from politicians and National Guard units in states that base the airplanes. This debate is about more than the performance of a single airplane. These are the battle lines. The Fate...

Stuck on the rings Like a drop of dew hanging on a leaf, Tethys appears to be stuck to the A and F rings from this perspective. Tethys (660 miles, or 1,062 kilometers across), like the ring particles, is composed primarily of ice. The gap in the A ring through which Tethys is visible is the Keeler gap, which is kept clear by the small moon Daphnis (not visible here). Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
