The UK unveils its first public statue of a historic black woman. This tribute is to Mary Seacole, a 19th century nurse who is seen striding forward; a disc behind her has an impression of the ground in Crimea, where she served on the battlefield. “Seacole’s London statue is a welcome tribute to a woman who was selfless in her work, overlooked in her death, and, more than a century later, finally receiving a memorial that will help assure she’s not again forgotten.”

This image is from a new series of pictures by photographer Valentina Loffredo (@thatsval). “In ‘Stillness’, the seascape becomes a metaphor for life, with the buoys as reference points, that keep us stable in a constant flow of time and events,” Loffredo writes. “But when something major happens, everything is shaken: the time stops, the tide washes over us, the buoys are in the sand. And you are the sand. And you are the buoys. While we focus on our true essence a...

workman: likeafieldmouse: Adam Fowler - Escaping Forward (2012-13) These are “sculptural drawings”. Fowler first draws large, looping gestural drawings in graphite, then cuts the negative spaces out with an X-Acto knife and layers the resulting graphite “laces” to create a kind of grayscale chaos.  Read a fascinating interview with the artist here.
