The Rebuilding of Coventry (circa 1956). Coventry was devastated by the unusually heavy bombing raid unleashed by the Luftwaffe on the 14th November 1941, symbolised by the destruction of its Gothic cathedral. The widespread destruction provided the impetus to develop a plan to reconstruct the city centre. Only three days after the raid, a plan was submitted and accepted by the city council. Albert Bridge House, Manchester, UK (circa 1959) The 19 storey office block was built by the Ministry of Works to house various Government departments. Due to the amount storage being housed in the block, it was constructed with thicker floors able to take larger than normal loads. The building was faced in Portland stone slabs which were used as the formwork for the block to increase construction speed.
