30 years ago, the Challenger space shuttle exploded shortly after launching. The seven crew members lost their lives. The cause of explosion was determined to be an o-ring failure in the right solid rocket booster. Cold weather was determined to be a contributing factor. More information on the Challenger tragedy and mission STS-51L here. Photo: NASACredit: Canadian Space Agency’s Facebook Account

ASTRO-H space observatory will be able to look at the very closest region around giant black holes where the most intense X-ray radiations are being emitted. Not only will this give astronomers a clearer picture of how these cosmic predators evolve, but also how galaxies like our own came to be. Magnifying the distant universe Galaxy clusters are some of the most massive structures that can be found in the Universe — large groups of galaxies bound together by gravity. This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveals one of these clusters, known as MACS J0454.1-0300. Each of the bright spots seen here is a galaxy, and each is home to many millions, or even billions, of stars. Astronomers have determined the mass of MACS J0454.1-0300 to be around 180 trillion times the mass of...

Lake Iznik winter night This wide-angle view from Lake Iznik, near Bursa, Turkey, displays bright winter stars, planet Jupiter (the brightest point) and the Milky Way. Lake Iznik is one of the largest lakes in Turkey, about 12 km wide and 30 km long and its southern shore is defined by the southern branch of North Anatolian Fault. The big rock in the foreground is known as Sarikaya (meaning Yellow Rock) which rises 85 meters from the lake and is a favorite spot for rock climbers. Image credit...
