R Sculptoris and its hidden companion This new NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a star known as R Sculptoris, a red giant located 1500 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Sculptor. Recent observations have shown that the material surrounding R Sculptoris actually forms a spiral structure — a phenomenon probably caused by a hidden companion star orbiting the star. Systems with multiple stars often lead to unusual or unexpected morphologies, as seen, for example, in the wide...

This @Airbus pen and tape measurement came along with me to Jakarta. I got this from Airbus when I visited them at their chalet during the recent Singapore Airshow #sgairshow. Before landing, I literally measured my seat width and it was exactly 18in wide. As much as I like Boeing aircraft, it needs to prioritise passenger comfort too. Our waists aren’t getting any smaller. #paxex (at TR2274 9V-TRM)

Triangulum galaxy snapped by VST The VLT Survey Telescope (VST) at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile has captured a beautifully detailed image of the galaxy Messier 33. This nearby spiral, the second closest large galaxy to our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is packed with bright star clusters, and clouds of gas and dust. The new picture is amongst the most detailed wide-field views of this object ever taken and shows the many glowing red gas clouds in the spiral arms with particular clarity. Mess...

astrodidact: APOD: Spiral Galaxy NGC 1512: The Inner Ring (2017 Aug 07)Image Credit: NASA, ESA, Hubble Space Telescopehttps://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap170807.html Explanation: Most galaxies don’t have any rings – why does this galaxy have two? To begin, the bright band near NGC 1512’s center is a nuclear ring, a ring that surrounds the galaxy center and glows brightly with recently formed stars. Most stars and accompanying gas and dust, however, orbit the galactic center in a ring much further out...

Jets and explosions in NGC 7793 This new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows NGC 7793, a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Sculptor some 13 million light-years away from Earth. NGC 7793 is one of the brightest galaxies in the Sculptor Group, and one of the closest groups of galaxies to the Local Group — the group of galaxies containing our galaxy, the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The image shows NGC 7793’s spiral arms and small central bulge. Unlike some other spira...

Land space in Singapore is at a premium, and has to be utilised well. Although there are still some empty space to make room for development, the desire for more ‘green lungs’, in a country whose population continues to grow, gets stronger. This is the challenge that Singapore’s urban planners have to consider. (at The URA Centre)
