“In Guangzhou in the 1830s, Guan Qiaochang Lamqua was commissioned by American missionary and doctor Peter Parker to create a visual record of his patients. Guangzhou was the only Chinese port open to foreign trading until the Opium Wars of the 19th century, and it became a rare hub of direct interactions between East and the West cultures.
